    I think it's really cool to read a book in its original language. Here u can just talk about books u recently have read in English.
    Curretly i'm reading 2 books. One is called 'Mayor of Casterbridge' by Thomas Hardy(a brilliant British author). The other book i an Indian book, ' The God of Small Things' by Arundhati Roy. I must say that this book is incredible.

    I agree that, if it's possible, books should be read in their author's language. I've been reading "The World According to Clarkson" by Jeremy Clarkson, the guy from Top Gear. It's one of those books which often loose something in translation, because some jokes are impossible to translate. However, sometimes it's difficult to understand, because I don't know people and places mentioned there, so some jokes aren't funny at all. I know that Polish version has explainations for people who don't know British culture, but as reader of British version, I'm supposed to know all people mentioned, apparently. :)

    My brother got back from Norway lately. The intersting thing he said was that they very rarely traslate books. The majority of them are in English, it's hard to find sth in Norwegian in a bookshop. If there's a foreign film on TV there's no reading, just subtitles. I guess there are just too few Norwegians to do it.
    I'm reading "The Bard's tales' Marcedes Lackey;

    OK so what are you guys reading now?
    I think we should just write titles and authors and maybe what the book's about if you think it's good and that maybe somebody else might wanna read it too.

    here goes:
    - "johnny got his gun" - dalton trumbo.
    story of a young guy who got drafted into WWI and got badly hurt: got paralised and lost his vision and hearing, basically all he got left is his sense of touch. people in the hospital think he's also brain dead because he's not communicating (well he can't). try and imagine lying in bed like that, unable to do anything...

    - "manchild in the promised land" - claude brown
    story (fictionalized autobiography) of a boy growing up in harlem in the 50's.
    how it was for the freed slaves to move from the plantations to the big city, they believed full of opportunities and how they found themselves in the ghettos. Claude's parents were working so they didn't have much time for him so he spent his days skipping school and getting in trouble or being locked up and getting in trouble there. as he get's older he realizes that he's gonna need an education and goes to evening school.
    it's a classic, a lot of people said I should read it so I'm reading it.

    correction:
    in "johnny got his gun" the main character lost his arms and legs and that's why he can't move. he can only move his head and kinda rock his trunk which is hard coz he doesn't have much leverage

    The book I'm reading now is "The amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents" by Terry Pratchett, my favourite author. It is about... well, the amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents :). I think it's worth of reading just because of an author. He is one of the best fantasy writers, with both Neil Gaiman and J.R.R. Tolkien, of course.
    I read this book - and all the rest of the "Discworld series" - in Polish, so it's easier for me to read now in English. When I finish it, I'll get stuck into "Eleven minutes" by Paulo Coelho, my teacher lend me it. Do you know it is good?
  • The Serpent of Midgard

    It's really cool to read ur favorite books in original versions, but u have to choose them carefully. For example, if u prefere sci-fi or fantasy with old/futuristic, in a matter of fact - complicated terminology and forms u'll have a lot of problems for sure. Because of this shit everyone get bored and anoyed. The worse thing is, that a good dictionary never gives enough support for technical and specialistic words. But... sometimes even the translated words mean nothing, so it's not so very important drawback :-)
