Review : RED FANG - “Red Fang”

released March 31, 2009 by Sargent House

Bloodthirsty young groove rockers explode from the Portland, Oregon underground with their debut album. It’s slopping over with almost more riff-heavy crunch than you can handle, but they ably balance inventive harmonies with the unbridled revelry. They mean Big Business. They proudly wield The Sword (and other weapons, too … check out the hilarious video for “Prehistoric Dog”). They’re here to Clutch your underwear, give you all Melvins, and Torche the town. Whatever, that’s enough…just listen to it. From the initial blasting three-part combination of tracks to the downtempo dirge of 4 and beyond, we got a burrower here, folks. Expect this to be on many Best of 2009 lists (including mine), even with 9 months to go.

Ten face-opening songs, six of them hardcore glory, with three or four less-inspired, kinda lame tracks. Still, Red Fang rock, and have that sharp-riffing, slow, building menace that shows they've been listening to their Sabbath, Melvins, and maybe, if I can dream, MC5. This self-titled release is gorilla music for the faithful primates like me who need volume.

The best songs are withering in their attack-"Human Remain Human Remains," "Prehistoric Dog" and "Wings of Fang." Yet, they pale in comparison to "Witness," which forces us to swallow its Stooges pill hard and like it. "Whales and Leeches" is almost Flipper-like in its scary distorition, a slow moving beast that atones for the tired two-chord snore of "Reverse Thunder" and "Good To Die." Few bands could keep up the pace Red Fang sets for itself on the highlights, though.

Sargent House is an out of the way label that seems to love distorition and other instruments of the true sonic church. Red Fang are the latest priests of turn it up and piss off.

Red Fang’s signing to Relapse has been made official. The group will release their as-yet untitled new album through the label early next year and commented on their signing with the following:

“We are f’ing stoked to sign a deal with RELAPSE. We had a great time recording with Chris Funk, mixing was finished back in February/ March and now we are ready for it to hit the streets. We’re still brainstorming a title for the unnamed beast. …and holy shit, get ready for new videos!”
